Canyonlands is not one park but four, split by two rivers that meet at a confluence no road reaches. The Green and the Colorado join at the centre of the park, carving the land into Island in the Sky, the Needles, the Maze, and the rivers themselves.
Each district is separated from the others by canyon walls, not by signage. The Wingate cliffs beneath the mesa rim were dunes in the Triassic. Ancestral Puebloan granaries and rock-art panels sit in alcoves throughout the canyons, some occupied until roughly 1300 CE.
The park receives a fraction of the visitors that neighbouring Arches does, and most of them never leave the paved overlooks. Grand View Point, Mesa Arch, and the Green River Overlook absorb the traffic. Below them, the White Rim bench stays quiet.
